Are you ready for the ULTIMATE ice cream dessert? The king of all ice cream sundaes? I sure hope so because today we are making Banana Splits.

I love ordering a banana split when we go out for ice cream, but banana splits are easy to make at home and SO fun, especially during the summertime! Our boys love banana split nights and so do I!

Grab a spoon and get ready to dig in!

Classic Banana Split

Rumor has it that the banana split was created by David Strickler, who enjoyed inventing sundaes at Tassell Pharmacy's soda fountain in Latrobe, Pennsylvania in 1904.

It was obviously a hit because the banana split is still a VERY popular dessert today. It is sold at ice cream shops all over and it is a favorite dessert to make at home.

Traditional Banana Split Ingredients

To make a traditional banana split ice cream sundae, you will need the following ingredients.

  • Banana- the star of the show!
  • Ice cream- a scoop of vanilla, chocolate, and strawberry
  • Crushed pineapple or chopped fresh pineapple
  • Chocolate syrup
  • Strawberry sauce or chopped fresh strawberries
  • Whipped cream
  • Maraschino cherries
  • Chopped peanuts

Optional Toppings

I love the classic banana split. It is perfect in every way BUT if you want to do a twist on the classic, here are some additional ideas.

  • Switch up the ice cream and use your favorite flavors!
  • Use hot fudge, salted caramel sauce, or butterscotch sauce!
  • Drizzle melted peanut butter over the top! YUM!
  • Mix up the nuts! Use pecans, candied pecans, walnuts, or pistachios!
  • Add chopped up Oreo cookies or chopped up candy bars!
  • Garnish with toasted coconut, chocolate chips, or sprinkles!

How to Make a Banana Split

Before you get out the ice cream, make sure you have a long, shallow dish to make your banana split. You can use the traditional banana split boats, glass or disposable, but if you don't have those, use the best dish you can find. Pro tip-check your local thrift store for banana split bowls or ask your grandma:)

Also, make sure all of the toppings are ready to go! We don't want the ice cream to melt so it is important to be prepared.

Ok, let's make a banana split!

  • First, peel the banana and cut it in half lengthwise. Place the banana slices against the sides of a long, shallow dish.
  • Place the scoops of vanilla, chocolate, and strawberry ice cream in a row between the banana slices.
  • Drizzle the pineapple sauce (or spoon the fresh pineapple) over the vanilla ice cream. Drizzle the chocolate syrup or hot fudge over the chocolate ice cream. Drizzle the strawberry syrup (or spoon the fresh strawberries) over the strawberry ice cream.
  • Top each scoop of ice cream with a generous dollop of whipped cream and a maraschino cherry. Garnish with the chopped nuts and DIG IN!

Banana splits are fun to share, but if you want your own, GO FOR IT!
